About APRODEHNI

APRODEHNI is a Christian organization with an ecumenical vision. It promotes Christian values and principles by focusing on the integral development of poor communities to improve the quality of life for all their members. Formerly known as the UNION OF CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES IN EL SALVADOR (The name change was required when the group became recognized as a legal Non-Governmental Organization), APRODEHNI was born in the intensive last days of the country's bloody civil war. Its goal was to seek to resolve some of the tremendous problems encountered by the poor situated in and around the city of San Salvador.

It’s name is an acronym for Asociación para la Promoción de los Derechos Humanos de la Niñez en El Salvador or, in English, Association for the Promotion of the Human Rights of the Children of El Salvador, and children and youth are it core concerns. As stated on its Web site, “The reason we exist is for the children, especially those children who live in situations of economic deficiency, risk, abandonment, abuse and violence, and are marginalized from a worthy human development. We also help families in need and that are in a state of emotional crisis, demanding the attention from specialists who sensitively help to resolve their problems”

Towards this end, organization projects revolve around:

APRODEHNI goes where the need is greatest, so, in the past few years, it has reached further outside the city limits. They are now concentrating their efforts in rural areas where the people eke out a living working in agriculture, fishing, and clamming/crabbing. Currently, the work focuses on three provinces in El Salvador: La Paz, Sonsonate, and San Salvador. In La Paz, efforts are focused in four towns: San Luis la Herradura, Santa María Ostuma, Santiago Nonualco, and San Pedro Masahuat. In Sonsonate, the organization run programs in two towns in the northern part of the province: Apopa and Nejapa.
